It’s always fun to talk about the future, especially since we’re at the beginning of a new decade. Here’s a chance for you to discuss what YOU think of the future, and win a HP Mini 5101 while you’re at it.

We’ve been talking about the future for quite a bit this month, from our presentation at HP’s Future Is event:

and on the past few episodes of Simply Geek and 65bits.

One trend we’ve noticed is that the way we consume content is changing as we step into the future. Just this week, Apple launched the iPad, a brand new platform that claims to revolutionize the way we consume books, magazines and newspapers. Today we got to unbox the HP TouchSmart 300 PC, featured on one of our recent first look videos, specially thanks to Melvin Yuan. This box was so huge we needed two people to do the unboxing! The HP TouchSmart 300 is essentially a 19″ All-in-one touch screen computer running on Windows 7. The unit that we received happened to be a low-end model without the TV tuner or the keyboard light, as featured at the Nothing But HP For Me event.

Back at the HP Fall 2009 launch event in Singapore, HP announced the HP Touchsmart 600 and Touchsmart 300, an update to their line of all-in-one touchscreen computers. With these two computers, they introduced a brand new version of their Touchsmart software that finally allows developers to build custom tiles for people to download and install. This new Touchsmart software is also a lot more customisable than before, and has more powerful tiles that are more than just shortcuts to external applications.

At the HP Fall 2009 launch event in Singapore, HP announced the HP Mini 311, a 11.3″ version of the HP Mini 110. This is also HP’s first netbook featuring the Nvidia ION graphics chip and an HDMI-out port.

This netbook features a 3D imprint cover designed by Tord Boontje, and has newer software such as QuickWeb (instant web access without booting up) and Quicksync. This netbook will also feature Windows 7 starter edition.

At the HP Fall 2009 launch event in Singapore, HP announced the HP Envy 15, a new premium notebook that resulted from their acquisition of Voodoo.

Jerrick and I had a conversation about the HP Envy just last night, and we realised that the Envy 15 might just do very well.

While most of you can’t tell what’s so special about the Envy’s design, those of us who were at the launch itself would agree that the HP Envy was really a beautiful machine. Sure, it looks just like a Macbook Pro, from the metal casing, the glass-to-the-edge display, the black hinge, all the way to the button-less touch pad. However, if I had to choose between a Macbook Pro and the HP Envy 15 strictly based on design, I’d go with the HP Envy. Something about the design just makes it look really beautiful and expensive.

Then there’s the specifications on the Envy 15. They’re not in the video, but here’s the official list:

  • Future, yet-to-be-announced processor based on the Intel Core i7
  • ATI Hobility Radeon HD 4830 with 1GB GDDR3 VRAM
  • 15.6″ Full HD (1920 x 1080) LED backlit HP Ultra Brightview Display
  • Up to 16GB of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM with Dual Channel Memory Support
  • Pretty insanse Hard Drive options (Single SSD 320GB / Dual SSD: 160GBx2 / SSD 160GB + HDD 250GB 5400RPM / HDD 250GB or 320GB or 500GB 7200RPM)
  • VGA Nightvision Webcam with IR LED for illumination
  • Beats Internal speakers
  • HDMI-out, eSATA port

Of course, they did leave out some things as well, namely the optical drive, and a VGA port (you need to get an HDMI to VGA adapter)

Then finally, it’s not difficult to build the most powerful machine in the world, but it’s difficult to do it while making it relatively affordable. According to the official press, the HP Envy 15 will begin sale from October 22, 2009, with a starting price of US$1899 (or S$2700). If the base model already has the new Intel chip, the ATI graphics cards and the HD display, it’s going to be a really attractive machine to buy.

Some of the Tech65 crew were attending Twestival, the local tweet-up aimed at raising money for charity, when Daniel and Justin noticed an HP Mini 5101 on a table there. Without hesitation, we tried to dig up as much as we could regarding the HP Mini, and filmed it. Then we asked for permission… :P

This video was so ad-hoc, so unplanned that we had to rush through it as I didn’t have enough memory left in my camera. That’s why the video gets cut of abruptly at the end. Hope you enjoyed it!
