Posted by NTT | No commentsThis week the usual suspects talk about Instant Messengers. They look at the good old days of the IRC, peek into the current underlying technologies and talk where how they expect IMs to go in the future. MSN, Skype, Yahoo, GChat, ICQ and even BBS, we’ve got all of them covered.
As it has happened often, our discussions went really long. So in this part you will hear the 2nd half the discussion. The 1st half is in Ep18.1 of Simply Geek, which you can download and listen to.

Posted by NTT | No commentsTo answer many queries we had about our process of producing podcasts at Tech65, we decided to have a discussion with podcasters Daniel, Timothy Lim and Hisham, on how they produce their podcasts. We talk about Recording, Editing, Publishing and Live Streaming. We also look at various tools and techniques used in podcasting.

Posted by NTT | 2 CommentsThat’s right, we’re back with our annual predictions episode. An episode where we simply sit around with a couple of beers and/or other suitable highly flammable liquids, ionic plasmas and mad concoctions of liquors and bathtub booze. We bring together the entire crew of Tech65 as well as the occasional street tramp (Yes, we’re looking very much at you, Mr. Italian Castrato) and revisit our 2010 predictions. We then go on to predict what we’re gonna see in 2011 in the world of Tech. I could lie and say it was largely boring and highly unlistenable because of Chinmay’s High Pitched imitations of Lady Gaga, but you know we wouldn’t inflict that upon you. We thus humbly request that you listen in to find out how accurate we were last year, and based on such knowledge, assess our efforts in predicting next year’s outcomes.
65Bits is going through metamorphosis, and as a butterfly takes time to emerge from it’s beautiful hanging cocoon, so must the team here at Tech65, well, I say team… we really mean the Monkeys. You’ve met them, Justin and Justin? Do sit tight, and keep looking at our podcast feeds, and cut us some slack, coz y’know if Singapore’s …est podcast can take a break, you better let us take one too! Soon, you will be able to hear us again in a new format and fresh sound. So keep supporting us, which means telling your friends other than Jerrick, Hisham and DK, to check us out for everything Tech. P.S. Sayanee, I didn’t forget you! You tick so many boxes on our equal opportunities form, you should be president of our little set-up. *so say the word and I’ll …disappear a certain Daniel Tsou.*

Posted by NTT | 1 CommentWe started the podcast Simply Geek about an year ago to quench our thirst for geeking out and just talking about geeky stuff among ourselves. Basically we needed an excuse to talk, and thought, “Hey, people might be interested in listening to this”. With me being in Sweden, we decided to try to do it over Skype. We knew Leo Laporte did it, but it had never worked well in Singapore. After a few try-outs, it worked.
Over the last 16 episodes we have covered everything from Starcraft2 to Productivity and we’re hoping to continue these geeky discussions going forward (with Skype gods blessings ofcourse).
While I won’t go into the details of our viewership, I would like to touch on the tech/production side of things that we have learnt doing Simply Geek. Here are some points.
1. Always pray to the Skype Gods. Since Simply Geek was always recorded over Skype, Skype HAD TO work.
2. Test and re-test your setup for long lengths of time. There was once an episode where we had some audio issues 10mins into the recording, which was impossible to notice while recording.
3. iPhone headsets are awesome for Skype recordings. They’re handy and omnipresent and way better than built-in laptop mics.
4. Get the person with the best internet connection to start a Skype call. It yields the best quality.
5. Try to record on multiple locations. Best if all involved parties record.
6. Backup Backup Backup!!
7. Wikipedia is your best friend for facts. NOT!
8. Have a script and don’t use it. Always good to know the general direction but doesn’t have to be so strict.
9. Keep a track of time. So that you don’t have to split the shows.
10. Note down all the links mentioned for easy shownotes creation.
To continue with our geekery, we need your help to know what you want us to talk about on the future episodes of Simply Geek. As you know on Simply Geek, we take a geeky topic (doesn’t have to be tech, anything geeky will do) and discuss on it with some guests who’re enthusiastic about that topic. So it’s always the topics and the guests which make great episodes. So, please feel free to recommend topics which you want to hear us discuss, and or guests you want to hear on Simply Geek by updating this spreadsheet – http://bit.ly/sgtopics. We will use this to plan our future episodes.
Thanks for your help, and we hope to keep bringing you awesome content which you want to listen to!
Njoy,

We cover a range of topics from the ideologies behind Productivity, to the human psychology involved. We also discuss a few common situations faced by everyone, and finally, talk about tools we can use to improve productivity. Do remember to check the show notes for the links to the various tools and websites we talked about in the show, oh and a couple of special announcements below as well.
